This article talks about difference between rattan and all-weather wicker furniture
Wicker VS Rattan
Wicker and rattan are often used interchangeably but they are not the same thing. Wicker is a type of weave and rattan is a natural material (plant fibre) that is used to make wicker furniture.
When people say natural wicker furniture, most of the time they may be referring to furniture that is woven using natural rattan or other weaving materials such as water hyacinth or straw. All-weather wicker or synthetic wicker is usually made from PVC or Polyethylene and they can withstand the weather elements much better than natural wickers.
Why natural rattan furniture cannot be used for outdoors
While rattan is very durable and flexible, it will eventually wear out and break apart (much like most wood) when left outdoors from season to season. Rattan is a natural plant fibre and they are sensitive to humidity. During rainy season, if the humidity level gets too high, your rattan furniture can get mouldy.
Looks like real rattan, only stronger
All weather wicker from CHOF is made from HDPE by using an extrusion machine that can produce vine-like pieces that resembles the authentic, natural rattan. While there are many other polymer grades available in the market, CHOF uses HDPE due to its many advantages as compared to using PVC or PP.
1. HDPE (High-density Polyethylene) is very strong. It is resistant to moisture and chemicals.
2. HDPE plastic is the most environmentally stable of all plastics – giving off no harmful fumes into the environment. Even when burnt, HDPE does not release toxins.
3. HDPE wicker can be recycled. As they release no toxins when burnt, they are most often recycled into plastic buckets or planter pots.
Weather-resistant and rust-free aluminium frame
This HDPE all-weather wicker is wrapped or woven on a steel or aluminium frame. Almost all of the furniture frames produced by CHOF is using aluminium, and therefore they are rust-proof and they do not warp. This gives our clients the opportunity to reweave the wicker even after the furniture is being used for a few years as the aluminium frame inside will still be intact from the weathering process.
