What does mold look like on rattan?

The white fuzzy patch you see on your rattan is most likely mold or mildew growth, which happens because rattan is a natural, porous material that easily absorbs moisture. Here’s why it developed:
🌧️ 1. Humidity or Moisture Exposure
If the piece was stored or used in a damp or poorly ventilated area, moisture got trapped in the fibers. Rattan doesn’t dry quickly, so humidity encourages mold to grow.
(Common in rainy seasons or coastal regions, or in storage rooms without airflow.)
🌫️ 2. Lack of Air Circulation
Even if the room isn’t very humid, stagnant air can cause condensation to stay on the surface — perfect conditions for mildew.
🧺 3. Dust or Organic Residue
Dust, sweat, or spills (like drinks or cleaning residue) can feed mold spores that naturally float in the air.
☀️ 4. Not Fully Dried After Cleaning
If you cleaned or wiped the rattan before and didn’t dry it under sunlight or with air circulation, the leftover moisture inside the fibers can lead to mold over time.
🛡️ How to Prevent It
Keep rattan away from walls and allow airflow around it.
Use a dehumidifier or silica gel packs if indoors.
Occasionally wipe with a diluted vinegar solution to kill hidden spores.
Make sure it’s completely dry before covering or storing.
